Common Sense with Money: "Give Back with Barbie Cares" at Walmart Nov 8. - I love this promotion Mercedes shared with us. Here is what you should do with your old barbies that are no longer wanted. Much better than sitting in a landfill!

Home Made Fire Starters......

Every year, I make my own fire starters. I use all recycled items and turn them into something I use almost everyday. I start with shredded paper. I use the paper I get from the fax I receive from my work at home job each morning.

I ball the shredded paper up and place it into cardboard egg cartons and then top each section with old dryer lint.

I melt the old wax I save from my tart burner all year long.

I pour the melted wax on top of the filled egg cartons.

I let them sit to cool and harden.....

.....then I break them up and store them in this basket.

I use one each day to help me start the fire in the fireplace.

They are made from 100% recycled material and FREE! Now that works for me!

Product Review and a Giveaway.....

Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival Button

Bloggy giveaway number 3 today comes along with a product review, a little sad note and a gift card! This one is sponsored by Build-A-Bear Workshop.

When I was a brownie leader, I took my troop to a Build-A-Bear Workshop and they all made their own stuffed animal of their choice and picked out clothing to dress it too. It is a great way to sepnd an hour or 2 of your time with a child. It is lots of fun and they have a very nice stuffed animal to remember the day by.

On Saturday we got this in the mail to review. Right away my DD wanted to keep it. I said no, I may give it as a gift. It sat in the box until today.

Our 13 1/2 year old dog had to be put to sleep this morning. DD stayed home from school today to go with me. She remembers putting a dog to sleep when she was 5 and to console her we bought her a Bratz doll. All the crying stopped. Today she said she would either like a new dog (remember we still have a 7 month old beagle who is very wild yet!) or an ipod. I said she was getting neither and passed her the box of tissues.

6/25/1995 - 10/27/2008
May he rest in peace.

When we got home, I remembered how much she wanted this Build-A-Bear. Look at the smiles that brought! She is now busy coloring the special box they give you to keep them in.

Build-A-Bear not only has quality items at an affordable price and a fun filled store but a great website here.... Build-A-Bear Workshop-United States: Home Page. They also have a Webkinz type website here... Build-A-Bearville - Home. Be sure to check them all out!!

How to save money on your electric bill....

The easiest way to way to save money on your electric bill is to unplug your electronic devices while they are not in use. Even though you are not using them, if they are still plugged in, they still pull a little bit of electric. That is what Best Buy is calling Vampire Electric.

Best Buy has declared October 30, 2008, National Vampire Awareness Day.

These unassuming predators have been feeding off valuable electricity from everyday appliances and electronics when they are in the off position or in standby mode.

Innocent looking prey include: plasma TVs, computers and game consoles, DVD/VCR players, DVRs, adapters for MP3 players, and cell phones, which can waste up to half the energy they consume.

A computer left on continuously can suck nearly as much power as an energy efficient refrigerator; anywhere from 70 – 250 watts, depending on the model and how it is used.A 500-watt, 65-inch LCD TV left on all the time would cost $484 in electricity per year and the generation of that electricity would produce 5,873 pounds of CO2 per year

THE SCARY FACTS:Roughly $4 billion annually across the United States is spent on electricity lost to “vampire power,” according to the International Energy Agency.40 percent of all electricity used to power electronics in the average American home, such as TVs, DVD players and computers, is consumed while these products are turned off, according to the Department of Energy. The average home wastes close to $1,000 in electricity costs per year at current rates (more in the future if energy costs continue to climb). Each watt of vampire power costs about one dollar per year - if you have 25 power vampires consuming an average of seven watts each, they will cost you $175 per year and emit about 900 kilograms of carbon dioxide.

The average microwave consumes more power when it is not in use.The average American home has approximately 20 to 40 electronics plugged in that abuse vampire power. The electricity vampires prey upon is significant and can cost up to 10 percent of an average household’s monthly electric bill.

FORGET THE GARLIC THIS HALLOWEEN – HERE’S HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF:Use a power strip: Plug your chargers into a power strip and when you’re not using those chargers, turn the power strip off.

Get unplugged: All of your chargers (cell phone, MP3, laptop, and even electric toothbrushes) continue to draw electricity even when the device is not charging. When the device has been completely charged unplug the charger from the wall.

Turn your computer off: Completely shut down your computer and printer when not in use. If you are unable to do so, at least make sure the computer goes into a low-power sleep, standby or hibernate mode. And watch out for those screen savers; graphic intense screen savers can actually waste power.

Look for the Star: Upgrade electronics and appliances to Energy Star-rated models, which draw less power than the average when in “off” mode.

For more tips and advice on ridding vampires from your home, visit your local Best Buy store or check out http://www.vampireawarenessday.com/

Tuesday Free Stuff.....

Sam's Club - Gillette - free sample

Santa - free letter from Santa

Free Christmas Songs & Carols Holiday Music MP3 Listen or Download - free Christmas music

StartSampling: O at Home Magazine - free issue

Tackle it Tuesday............

It all started with wanting to take the kids to the orchard for a hayride, a pumpkin patch, and a corn maze. Maybe even a caramel apple. Look what we ended up with......

That is 55 pounds of apples that took both DD and I to carry. Thank goodness for the wagon. But.. we got them home.........

cut them up and let them simmer until soft................

then put them through the blender. I was so happy when I emptied the blender the first time and I had apple sauce!!

Then, I added a little sugar..................

.... and poured it into containers to cool. I have them stored in the freezer for winter eating!

That was much easier than I thought it would be. I made 2 batches so far and have at least one more to go... maybe 2. DH liked it so much that he ate a whole container of it last night for snack!!

We got 55 pounds of apples at 35 cents a pound for a total of $19.50. If I only have 1 batch left, it will have cost 5 cents an ounce for organic apple sauce. DH seems t think I have 2 batches left to make so that would make it even cheaper. Not bad!
