Discount grocery store.....

I went to the book fair at my kids school this afternoon. While I was out using gas, I decided to drive 3 miles farther to see what deals I could find at the discount grocery store. This is a tiny little store run by the Amish and it is way out in the country. You never know what you will find there. They have some dented cans and boxes (i do not buy dented cans) but some things are there just because the promotion on the box is no longer running or the company changed the packaging. They also have milk, bread, veggies and a few other lines of items that they buy whole sale. They have low over head so they can sell things cheaper. It is almost always full and today was no exception.
I got everything in the picture above for $20.xx. I needed milk and bread... everything else was a pantry filler.

P.S. - I forgot all about using cloth bags until I got home. UGH!!

This is the pile of things I have waiting to go to the post office this afternoon. All things I have sold. I also have an appointment at the outgrown shop, later this week, to sell my kids summer clothing from last year. Great ways to make a few extra bucks!!
I do need to make a comment about Miley Cyrus and the questionable pictures. I think that Vanty Fair and the photographer took advantage of a young girl that would like to be a little older - just like every other 15 year old girl! Shame on you Annie Leibovitz! I hope it is your career that suffers and not little Miley.

Monday.....

I had $18 in ECB to use up before 4/29 so I headed to CVS with a few other manufacturer's coupons, this CVS coupon http://iheartcvs.com/3off15exp060608.pdf plus a 50 cent rewards coupon. I had nothing from the sale flyer that I was interested in except the Bic razor which was .99 cents after the coupon and ECB it earned. I decided to stock up on things I can use but do not find deals on often. I think CVS regular prices are much higher than most other stores but I was using money that was about to expire so I got busy shopping. I miscalculated a little but I was still happy with my deals. I got everything in the above picture - plus a snickers ice cream bar :O( - for $7.77 out of pocket. I should have enough laundry detergent for a few months now too. Update: I forgot to say that my total before coupons was $37.27 and I forgot my cloth bags again!! UGH! I did not realize it until i was in the checkout line and it was raining so I did not want to run to my car. I do reuse those plastic bags so I do not feel like getting them is a total bad thing but I do need to get better at this cloth bag thing!!

Weekend deals.....

We got a $25 off anything coupon for the local pool store in the mail. We headed there tonight and got some chemicals we will need in just a few weeks in order to open our pool. All this for $1.03 (normally $26.03). Great deal for us!! (Refuse to use cloth bags on pool chemicals and then put food in them next week.)

Then we stopped at Walmart. I had a few coupons I wanted to use. I could not find everything but I got all this for $1.97. I even have a refund form to get $3.74 back on the deodorant! Yippee!! (I forgot to take my cloth bags in with me!! UGH!)

P.S. I got great deals at the farmers market Friday night. I was not there late enough for the "end of night markdowns" but I still found great stuff. Grapes were .89 cents a pound, bananas .33 cents a pound, $5 for a huge seedless watermelon and a box of small new red potatoes for $2.00. I also grabbed some corn on the cob which was not a great deal but looked yummy! I took a cloth bag with me but found it difficult to get the grapes and the new potatoes without using plastic. This is definitely a work in progress for me!

Friday......

We will be heading to the farmer's market late this evening. I find much better deals at the end of the night. They start marking fruit and veggies down so they do not have to take them home. I do not always think the prices are better than the grocery store but last week they were. This week I plan on going back and buying much more than I did last week but I will wait until almost closing time to get even better deals. Just another way to say a few bucks.

I stopped at Target this morning while running some errands. I am trying to combine trips now more than ever. Gas prices here this morning are $3.69!! OUCH! All the above items were $63.77 before coupons. After coupons I paid $29.20 for a total savings of $34.57. Not bad. I normally pay $17.99 for the big bag of dog food alone. I did grab a $4.00 baseball t shirt for my DS so that was included in that total. Not my very best Target run but really not so bad either. With a little bit of work, coupons really can help your budget while the economy is so rocky.

I have been considering it for a few years but, after reading this Living Plastic Free - YearTwo: Top 10 Tips to Reduce Plastic: Tip #2 yesterday, I think our family is ready to switch over to cloth grocery bags. You get a few cents off your bill at most grocery stores each time you use your own cloth bags but that is not why we have decided to switch. We want to be better about helping the environment - plain and simple. I have a few bags already but I will add one each time I shop at the store until I have enough. I need to keep them in my car or I will never remember to take them with me. I am not sure what I will do about the fruit bags I normally use. I may just take a basket with me to put all my fresh produce in. That will be the hardest part us. I am not concerned about the germs since I wash everything before eating it. I just like my things bundled together.

I am posting a little early since I have a mammogram scheduled for Thursday am. I had a great mail day today! the free beach towel from Parliament came and it is huge!! It took both my kids to hold it up for the display! Update: I think Colgate Corporation should give deodorant samples to women having a mammogram. It would be the perfect target group for them!! PLUS... a little freebie for women going through such and ordeal!

A free coupon for soft pretzels! Yummy!!!
The low fat enchiladas I made from scratch. They got a high 8 from my husband! I'll take that.

Recipe:
1 lb lean ground beef
steamed and pureed carrots and onion
1 can tomato sauce
1 can tomato juice
1 bag low fat cheese (i used regular)
flour tortilla's
- mix half tomato juice and half tomato sauce in pan with browned ground beef and pureed veggies. place this mixture and cheese inside the flour tortilla and roll, place in baking dish, seem side down. fill dish with rolled tortilla's and cover with the rest of the tomato juice/sauce. Bake at 350 degrees covered for about 20 minutes. Sprinkle the top with cheese and place back in warm oven uncovered and oven turned off.
- I added diced jalapenos to DH's enchilada's
- I had a nice size container of the hamburger/sauce mixture so I froze it to add to our spaghetti sauce at a later date.

WOW... what a spark I ignited in a few folks yesterday over one little comment that was neither mean or hateful. You would have thought Kate herself was leaving all those anonymos comments... but how could she possibly have the time to read my blog since she is so busy watching others fold, iron and put away all that laundry. But, I know she is not busy pretreating the laundry since she refuses to let her kids get dirty or messy because they may get something on all the free Gap and Gymboree clothing? Yes, I do watch the show (my kids love to watch all the little kids). BUT, I look at it as pure entertainment. Kind of like Ripley's Believe It or Not! I love to watch and read about large families, mostly out of amazement. While yes, I do think they love their children, I feel this couple is selling their children in order to keep up with the Jones (or Beth in this case) instead of working a 9 to 5 job like the rest of the world. The last thing I will say on the subject is this: Calves are inhumanely treated in order to bring liver to the grocery store shelf. I equate Jon Gosselin to the calf and the tv show to the grocery store shelf. Enough said.

I have a wedding coming up next month and thought about this as a unique gift. I thought a gift certificate for this place would make a great gift. They could have a wedding photo turned into a wonderful piece of art. Looking around this site has made me want some one for my own house! I really love the charcoal and pencil drawing. We have been wanting a family portrait. I think I could take a snap shot and have paint your life turn it into a wonderful piece or artwork to display over my fireplace instead of going to a professional photographer.

This is my favorite type of picture from this site but I really like many of the others too. This is a site you could spend a lot of time at and really enjoy what you see. I loved the photo of the fall leaves on a few mountain tops that they turned into a wonderful piece of art. This is the type of artwork that you treasure for a life time. I have even been thinking of having something done of our family beagle that we recently lost. Have her with us forever!

Thursday.....

This morning I got an email saying I had finally been selected to host a party at houseparty.com. Yeah!! It is the new Hershey Bliss chocolate too!! Yummy. That is exciting.. I hope they send lots of sample and a wig... i need a wig after pulling all my hair out while trying to get the oh so slow website to work! UGH!!
When I can home from the gym, I spent a half hour cleaning. One thing that included was cleaning out my purses, putting mails high on the wall in my closet and hanging the purses there. Much better than my old method of throwing them in a box under the bed and forgetting what is there! I changed into a new spring purse I bought several weeks ago with a gift card. The best news is, while cleaning out the old purses, I found a $20 Panera Bread gift card I bought as a Chistmas gift and was sure I threw away, and a $10 Toys-r-Us gift card! It does pay to clean from time to time!!

How does your garden grow?

This is how some of our garden starts to grow. This is a hobby for my husband but it also saves a few bucks. The top trays are mostly spring plants that need to go out as soon as we have a Saturday morning where the ground is not frozen. The bottom trays are full of summer veggies and flowers.

Below is what I got at the store last night for just $6.37 out of pocket. Total before coupons was $24.95 and I had $18.58 in coupons. The best surprise buy was the bagged spinach. They had a store sale of 50% off this brand and there were 55 cents coupons on display that double. It was originally $3.99 then $1.99 on sale minus $1.10 to be 89 cents a bag. My son eats spinach salads daily and we have been using a lot of spinach in our smoothies so I may go back at the end of the week to get more.
