Earth Day 2009

Our family has been trying to live a greener lifestyle for more than 2 years now. We have switched to cloth grocery bags (which I absolutely love!), we stepped up our curb side recycling efforts, we use refillable personal water bottles, we grow an organic garden, we freecycle to keep things from landfills and we recently purchased a rain barrel. While we could do much better, we think that if every family just did a little, we could see a huge change in our global warming problems. Our Earth Day Stuff....

As we work on the landscaping around the new porch, we planted this tree in honor of Earth Day.

We also purchased this rain barrel. This will be a great way to water our garden without using our well. DH has to pour a cement base for it to set on before we can start collecting rain water. I am very excited to have this! I would love to eventually get 2 more!

Praying for Stellan....

A few weeks ago, I told you about Stellan. This morning Stellan is going into the OR for open heart surgery. As a family with a heart child ourselves, this hit close to home. I can remember how it feels when you hand your baby over at the OR doors knowing very soon they will be relying on a heart and lung machine to keep you alive. That heart and lung machine is enough to scare the pants off of anyone just by itself. The list of side effects from just that needed machine is enough to make me cry still today. Stellan is facing a procedure that children his age do not normally face. If praying is what you do, please pray for this child. If prays are not your thing, please think some positive thoughts for him.

My children are wearing orange for Stellan today (Stellan's favorite color). We hope you will join us!

Good Friday.....

After after this issue yesterday, we decided to put a clock in DS's room.

So, even though my DH put a clock in DS's room last night with strict instructions about what time he was allowed to get out of bed and what time wii was allowed to be turned on...... DS came barging from his room again at 6:20 - fully dressed! UGH! Does he not understand these are the days where we get to sleep in a little? I did send him back in his room with strict instructions to not come out again until the time started with a 7! He did.

When I came downstairs at 8:30, I found the kitchen a mess. Instead of getting a bowl of cereal for himself like he always does....... he decided to try all the left overs from the restaurant we ate at all night. When he decided he did not like any of them while they were cold, he threw them all away. 1 bite taken out of everything and in the trash!

I can only imagine what time he will get up tomorrow! I am almost positive I will have to drag him out of bed in time for school on Tuesday though!

I know one day I will think these stories are funny!

DH is working on the garden today. After he turns all the ground, he will plant out spring crops. We have to be careful since we are still having frost at night.

The tomato cages are also all lined up and ready! They will have to wait until May. Oh how I long for a fresh garden tomato! It is always a blessing if we get a ripe tomato before July 4th.

Easter Break...

Today was our first morning of Easter Break from school. My daughter slept at a friend's house but my son was up, dressed and ready to play wii at 6:20 AM! There is a new rule in our house. No wii until 8AM!!! He thought I was being unreasonable. I think I was very generous!

We headed out to the dentist a little after the early morning wii session. This is my son being a little mad about being at the dentist. We then had to hear the dentist complain about how it hurts his feelings when kids say that. Does he think I care? Does he know I was up at 6:20 fighting the no wii until 8AM battle?

We then headed to Walmart for the deals I wanted in on this week. This is $42.62 in groceries (including $2.03 in taxes). After $26.77 in coupons and a $10 gift card that I won at a friend's party.... I paid $5.85.

Yesterday I posted this coupon.... Sears for a free Spatula at Sears. My friend Kasey over at Beautiful Mess printed the coupon and headed to Sears. Here is the Spatula she came home with.

Here is her experience in her words..... Kasey said "So I did get a spatula, however, the coupon is for a specific Sear's store. Says on the coupon, something... outdoors. I went to the common Sears store. I could only find one spatula on sale for 6.36. I brought the coupon to the counter and she talked to the manager who said that they would honor the coupon!!! Yeah. I could either find a kitchen gadget for the amount of the coupon or have the coupon go toward the spatula and pay the difference. I stuck with the spatula. I paid 1.48 for it. It was normally $8. I thought that was a really good deal. It's a really nice spatula."

As I look at this coupon today, it does say for a Sears Great Outdoors store. I never heard of that being a special Sears store. Did you? Anyway, the regular mall Sears store honored the coupon for Kasey so I would say it is worth a shot if you are already headed to the mall!

Frugal Exercise.....

You do not need anything fancy to get the propper exercise in a day. My newest exercise plan is to get 10,000 steps a day. It does take a lot of work to get to that, but you do not need a lot of money. I took a 2 mile walk around my neighborhood yesterday to help get me to this total. Frugal exercise works for me!!
