Homemade Laundry Soap......
Ingredients:
1 bar fels naptha, grated
1 cup arm & hammer super washing soda laundry detergent (a laundry booster)
1/2 cup borax
hot water
Directions:
1. Place grated soap in a pot.
2. Cover with water and simmer over medium heat until all soap is melted, stirring occasionally.
3. Pour into 5 gallon bucket.
4. Add washing soda and borax.
5. Add enough hot water to fill the bucket.
6. Stir (I use a long measuring stick, but any long stick will work).
7. Let sit overnight to gel.
8. Use 1 cup per load.
9. (You can pour this into old detergent containers or leave in the bucket. Please cover with a lid if leaving in the bucket to protect children and pets.).
This costs pennies per load and works great!! Add a little white vinegar to the load as fabric softener.

Frugal and Tasty Low Fat Muffins...........
I have been buying Weight Watcher's brand muffins these last few weeks as I diet. They taste great but are very expensive! This is my frugal solution...........
I found this cake mix in my pantry with a 2/$1.00 sticker on the top of the box. I buy these at the discount grocery store. I also saved my uneaten bananas. Add some home made apple sauce and 3 eggs and that gave me all the ingredients!
....... and ended up with 24 cupcakes (I wonder where the missing cupcake could be?) and 1 mini cake. I froze the muffins so I can pull a few out at a time. What I did not count on was my DH and DD loving these like they did! The mini cake is already gone! Since all these cost under $1.00, I guess I can share!!

Tackle it Tuesday...
It is that time of year again. Time to clean out the pantry. While DH watched football, I sat in the pantry (a corner room in my basement) and organized and purged. I even took a grocery (paper and reuseable!) full of items up to my kitchen to use. It is like shopping from home!
Over the last year, we have eaten this pantry down quite a bit. It is time to start restocking! Tomorrow I will post on how to stock your pantry free or cheap!
I bought all this peanut butter several months ago so I am going to assume it is still safe.

Monday.....
Sorry to be so late today. We headed out first thing this morning to a pediatric cardiology appointment over an hour away from home. We loaded the car with things to do and drinks and snacks. Thanks to all the kind remarks about this post... Frugal Finds From your Frugal Friend: Where I stand.... I will be trying to call this woman again today. I tried last night but her phone was busy. All night. I will be telling her she should be volunteering in a soup kitchen instead of spending so many hours on the phone just like she said I should do instead of spending so much time on line. (Uh -Oh! Is Facebook's word twist reporting my hours to her?) I do appreciate all the encouragement I recieved from my bloggy friends! I love you all!!

Where I stand...
When I first became a stay at home mom, I found a few pen pals to swap coupons, form friendships, and give each other support. This really helped me fill the personal communication void that my then 2 year old was unable to fill. I think the pen pal thing worked out for all of us and nice friendships were formed.
2 1/2 years ago, I started working again. Yes, I work from home but I still have hours in my day where my time is dedicated to my job. Part of that time, I am on the phone with patients reminding them of appointments. This is a job a 10 year old could do. To break up the boredom, I play on the computer while I work. This give me plenty of time for my blog, keeping in touch with friends and just plain surfing (OK, I do like to play word twist with my Facebook friends too!) I no longer have time for the penpal thing and I think I left a few offended.
My bloggie friend Debbie wrote this post.. Suburb Sanity: I'm back, baby! about what would happen when her town found her blog. Well, I guess I never thought about what would happen when my old pen pals found my blog. I got a very hate filled letter from one this afternoon.
She read this story... Frugal Finds From your Frugal Friend: The funniest story..... and was very offended. She thinks that the "Itchy Vagina" woman may have been Jesus and I offended him. Well, I guess she should know more of the story then. I tell everyone that goes to this nail salon that she is my favorite tech and I always hope to get her. I have long conversations with her each time even though I have said she speaks "broken English". If she is Jesus, she already knows how much I really do like her even though she shouted across the nail salon that she has an "itchy vagina"!
Another blog I frequently read is... Beautiful Mess: What's the Difference. I love her post about opinions vs. judgement. This is an issue we all struggle with. I did not mean to be judgemental of the "itchy vagina" woman.... just relayed a funny story. I am sorry If you, Miss "Hate Filled Letter" do not see the humor in the situation. (should I have told the "Itchy Vagina Woman" she was making fun of me when she said "OH MY" when she saw how bad my eyebrows needed to be waxed that day?)
Another point that she goes on to make is that I should maybe volunteer in a soup kitchen instead of spending time in a nail salon or on the computer. Well, dear, I am on the computer while I am working to help support my family. Should I stop getting my nails done because Miss "Hate Filled Letter" thinks I should? Well, let's think about this. I work hard to take care of my family. If I want to spend a few dollars to get my nails done each month, should I be allowed?
The meaning of frugal is not to live without. It means to use your resources wisely as my friend bloggy friend Mercedes explains in this video clip... Today's TMJ4 - Special Assignment - Video - Mercedes on a Budget.
By stretching my dollars and living more frugal, I am able to afford a few extras in life. I have never once claimed to be poor on this blog. It has never been about how poor I am and what I can get free. I also never claimed to be financially well off. I live a middle class life just like the majority of you. My DH and I both work.
While everyone is allowed an opinion, I will stand by my words and say that I am not making fun of anyone... except maybe my family. Very rarely do I print controversial words in my blog or in comments in someone else's unless I have firm beliefs in what I am saying. Blogs are like television. If you do not like it... do stop to look at it! If you have your own opinion and want to be heard... write your won blog and keep your rude comments off mine because they will be deleted.
And... by the way.... I will be going to visit "Itchy Vagina" woman tomorrow for the first time since her problem. I will still be hoping to have her do my nails!

I am helping a neighbor out this week and watching her kid before and after school. This morning, as I was loading the fireplace, so the kid would not freeze in my very cold house (my kids are used to it!)... the kid asked "why didn't you just flip the switch to light the fire instead of doing all that?" I am assuming at his house they have a gas fireplace OR a little fairy that does all that when you flip a switch. :O) Whatever!! Your way may be easier kid but mine is free!!

Weekend Update.....
I have not been out of the house very much this week until today. It is very hard to find change in parking lots when they are covered in snow and ice. We did an extra walk around the farmers market this am to look for change. My DD is really into this! So not only did we get extra exercise but we found 2 cents!! Not a million but ti will add up and it is found money!!
We are prepared for a snow storm this weekend. We have a garage full of wood, buckets of water and the portable DVD player is charged so bring it on Mother Nature!!

Not Me!!!!
I found this blog... my charming kids ..... when little Stellan was in the hospital for RSV. Stellan is home now and doing well. BUT... I still am drawn to this blog! I love it so much I decided to join along in her Monday carnival!It could not have been me who ate a whole Hershey bar after lunch, even though I am supposed to be eating better in 2009!
Was it really me that just deleted about 20 blogs from my favorites cause they started to bore me? Don't worry, I still have about 100 on the list!
Is it me that is secretly wishing for a big snow storm?
SSShhhh don't tell my DS that I think I enjoy reading Junie B Jones books to him more than he is enjoying them. They are funny books!!
It could not have been me that was secretly happy to see DH go to work this morning after being home since December 18th!! I hope the door did not hit him in the butt on the way out!!
Monday....
What a rough day in our house yesterday! First DD tested positive for strep. While I had her at the doctor, DH and DS went to visit Grammy. While there, DS called 911! UGH! It is time for Christmas break to be over!!
One of my new features for 2009 will be "Found Money". I am keeping track of how much money our family can find laying on sidewalks, streets and parking lots. I found a penny so far!! Can I fill this jar before the year is over on just found money? I will keep a running total on the right hand column. Let's see how much my family can find.

One of my New Years Resolutions was for our family to eat healthier. Exercise more too. No official diets but just to be healthier in general. I am supposed to start that today. I also start this day with a microwave waiting for a part in order for it to function again. I have a few things to clear out of the house too. This weeks menu will reflect a little of all this.

It is seed catalog season!! This one is my Dh's (the seed guru) favorite...... Seed Savers Exchange. They have all heirloom seeds and promote the idea of saving your own seeds from your crops instead of buying them each year. What a great "green" idea! When you buy seeds from places like Burpee, you can not do this since they genetically alter the seeds so that the seeds from the first year crop will not produce fruit for you. We have tried. You get a nice plant with little to no fruit on it.
Dh would like to become a master gardener but we are not sure about the time committment. With a very demanding job, a family and coaching DS's baseball team in the spring.... well, there just is not much time left do do anything besides mow the grass and work on your own garden.
With the economy how it is, there is not better time to try your hand at gardening! A few plants could really help your grocery bill! Some lettuce, a few tomatoes, peppers and cabbage!

New Years Day......
Well, here we are 2009. Another new year.
It is a tradition here to eat Pork and sauerkraut for good luck. I have some slow cooking in my crockpot. Any traditions in your neck of the woods?
I am also making some resolutions this year. Here is my short list.....
1. I am vowing to take some steps towards living a healthier life. I will be 42 this year and want to stay young. I will be walking more this year and sticking to it. Not only to lose weight but to have better health in general.
2. I would like to find more patience. I am wound tight most days. I would like to unwind a little and relax about life and be patient with others.
3. Our family started living a little "greener" in 2008 and I am happy with the progress we made. I would love to do a little better in 2009.
4. I want to build this blog just a little more in 2009. I have come a long way in the last 2 years but I would like to go just a little bit farther.
